What Is Meditation? A Simple Guide to Mantra, Breath, and Attention

Published August 2026 · Simha Studios

Meditation is a way of deliberately placing attention on one simple experience, then returning when the mind wanders. It does not require an empty mind, special beliefs, or a perfect posture.

What meditation is—and is not

In a basic session, you choose an anchor such as the breath, a sound, or a phrase. Thoughts, sensations, and feelings still arise; the practice is noticing that attention has moved and gently returning to the anchor. Meditation is therefore less about forcing calm and more about building a patient, repeatable relationship with attention. A few unhurried minutes practiced regularly are more useful than an occasional long session that feels like a test.

How to begin

Sit or lie down in a position you can hold comfortably for five minutes. Choose a short length, silence notifications, and let the next breath arrive naturally. When you notice planning, remembering, or judging, name it quietly if helpful and return to the next breath or repetition. End by noticing how you feel before getting up; there is no need to decide whether the session was good or bad.

Two simple mantra anchors

So Hum is a natural breath mantra: notice “So” on the inhale and “Hum” on the exhale. It suits quiet meditation because no forceful counting or speaking is needed. Om Namah Shivaya is a five-syllable Shiva mantra traditionally associated with reverence and inner steadiness; repeat it slowly when you prefer a clear, rhythmic phrase.

Build a practice you can keep

Begin with one approach for a week rather than changing techniques every day. A timer gives the session a defined beginning and end, while a guided meditation can help when you are unsure how to start.
